Artist Statement
Art is a uniquely human activity. While we can speculate about the degree that animals communicate, love, or mourn death, this is not the case when it comes to the creation of art. It is an activity which distinguishes our species from all of the other living things. The creation of and appreciation of art is part of our collective experience. It is part of everyone’s consciousness.

The artistic expression of organic shapes and geometric forms are found in almost every culture. The effect is so fundamental, that it is inherent to our being. It is part of our un- deciphered primordial DNA. The age-old artistic exploration of organic shapes and geometric forms created a universal language that defined cultures and facilitated communication with the supernatural.

I am an avid collector of Asian and tribal art. This art fills my personal spaces with a symphony of ancient voices and messages. The use of symbolic and abstracted forms as an introspective method of communicating is found throughout the collection. In certain instances, the artist imbedded a tangible spiritual energy in the artwork. This energy was necessary for the object to properly function as originally conceived. I have observed my guests, upon contact with such pieces, viscerally react to these energies. I have to ask myself, “What core reality did this artist tap into to create such a lasting spiritual presence?”

When I handle such artwork it is from a purely contemporary perspective. The piece is no longer used for its original purpose; instead, it has become a modern sculpture or artwork. My perceptions may have nothing to do with the intended meaning; nonetheless, I am frequently transfixed. The mystical forces and universal messages are evident. They were put there on purpose and intrinsically, still resonate.

Such experiences, underscore contemporary society’s abandonment of these original desires. My contact with these transfixing objects forces me to bridge the void between their origin and my own perspective. My sculptures attempt to reinterpret the universal and sacred meanings that have been awaken by handling material imbued with mystical energies. In this way I hope to give relevance to that which was once universally known, revered and protected.
